More Book Quotes That Stayed With Me

If there's two things you need to know about me it's that on one hand, I'm a huge bookworm who can always be found reading when I have the time; and on the other hand, I'm someone who lives by quotes. I collect them and plaster them everywhere I can see them, I internalize them and remember them in times of need.

These two things can be combined nicely when it comes to book quotes - I'm one of those people who marks pages that carry important or insiring quotes with dog-ears. I know, it's a really bad habit, but that doesn't stop me.

I love flipping through some of my favorite books and looking at the dog-eared pages, reading through the quotes I loved so much while reading the book. That's actually how I got the idea that manifested into my post Book Quotes That Stayed with Me, which was received with so many nice words and encouragement that I wanted to share some more of my favorite book quotes with you guys today!

1. "I don't care what the stars say about how small we are. One, even the smallest, weakest, most insignificant one, matters." - Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave

2. "One must always be careful of books and what is inside them, for words have the powers to change us." - Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel

3. "So many things become beautiful when you really look." - Lauren Oliver, Before I Fall

4. "Broken isn't the same as unfixable." - Marissa Meyer, Winter

5. "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." - J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

6. "There will always be more questions. Every answer will lead to more questions. The only way to survive is to let some of them go." - David Levithan, Every Day

7. "It's funny how humans can wrap their mind around things and fit them into their version of reality." - Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief

8. "Life doesn't have to be so planned. Just roll with it and let it happen." - Jenny Han, To All the Boys I've Loved Before

9. "There are always suprises. Life may be inverterately grim and the suprises disproportionatley unpleasant, but it would hardly be wort living if there were no exceptions, no sunny days, no random acts of kindness." - T.C. Boyle, The Tortilla Curtain

10. "The marks humans leave are too often scars." - John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

11. "No man is an island." - Nick Hornby, About A Boy

12. "Embellish you flaws. They will turn into your assets." - Marie Lu, The Young Elites

13. "Maybe there isn't such a thing as fate. Maybe it's just the opportunities we're given, and what we do with them." - Marissa Meyer, Cress

14. "It's hard to like practical jokes when your whole life feels like one." - Rick Riordan, The Last Olympian

15. "Life is a book and there are a thousand pages I have not read yet." - Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Princess

A Letter to My Late Grandmother

Hello Grandma.

Writing this letter to you is insanely difficult for me, and I've had a long, hard think about it, but I know that I finally have to deal with grieving because if I only ever keep all these things swirling about in my head where they currently are, I'm going to be stuck in this same dark space forever.

Truth is, it's been almost 12 years since you died, and even though people told me that I will eventually move on, I still get a lump in throath and feel my heart sink into my stomach whenever I think about you.

What wears me out the most is that I was only five years old when you died at the age of 66. That's not an age to die at. You should've had so much more time. Time for yourself, and your family, and my little brother, whom you never really got to know because the cancer that killed you came so shortly after his birth.

Even though I was so young and it's been so long, I'm glad I have at least some memories of you.
I remember the days you looked after me when my parents went to work and I was still too young to go to the kindergarten, I remember snuggling up on the living room couches with you and grandpa, I remember how you'd take me to the forest to play out.

What I don't remember is your voice, and that scares me. I don't even know whether I could even remember your face if we didn't have so many photos of you. It makes me feel like a failure.
I don't want to ask Mom whether she remembers your voice because I know how sad that would make her. I'm afraid to talk to Mom about you, period, because I cannot imagine what I would feel like if I'd lose her, so I cannot fathom what she ha sbeen going through for the past twelve years of her life. I'm afraid to rip up old wounds that never really healed.

I don't even dare to say this out loud, but I feel like when you died, a part of my childhood died with you.
I feel like such an event makes you grow up a lot faster. I mean, while my parents watched over you as you died, I was at home, playing games with my aunt who looked after me, absolutely clueless. I had no idea how terrible your situation really was. I didn't even get to say goodbye. I still blame myself for this everytime I stand in front of your grave.

I've thought about death quite a lot ever since you died. About the afterlife, and what it must be like.
When I was little, I imagined it like a kind of big hotel up in the clouds, where you were looked after by angels. I'd used to stare out the window and try to talk to you and your angels. I wondered whether they treated you well.

To be honest, I don't know. I don't know a thing about where you are right now and whether everything is better for you, the way my parents told me you'd be better now because you weren't in pain anymore.

But I do hope so. I really, really hope that wherever you are, you're full of happiness and hopefully re-united with grandpa.
I miss both of you so much. I would give anything to talk to you right now, to hug you. I wonder whether you'd be proud of the person I've become.

More than anything, I wish with all of my heart to see you again someday, whether it's in a hotel filled with angels, our old forest or anywhere else.

This letter is a part of my 'A Letter to...' series, made up of a set of letters I wrote but will never send.

10 Tourist Mistakes to Avoid In Rome

Judging by how much content centered around my trip to Rome has been plastered all over my blog - I wrote about Rome's best restaurants and created a photo diary of my trip - you guys might know how much I love the city by now.

I enjoyed my time there so much that I've made a vow to return one day - hopefully sooner rather than later.
However, no matter how much I enjoyed the time I spent in Rome, there's also quite a few lessons I've learnt during the week that I'll have to keep in mind when visiting again.

And as I know that Rome is literally overflowing with tourists, especiall around this time of the year and there will most definitely be a lot of tourists visiting Rome for the first time, I wanted to share 10 tourist mistakes you should definitely avoid making to make your stay more enjoyable!

1. Getting a hotel near Termini station.

It's definitely tempting to book a hotel or hostel in the area around Termini station, but that's a mistake that you'll only make once.
Our hotel was only a few hunderd meters from the station and even though it was located in the "nicer" or more tourist-y part of the neighborhood, you can literally walk fifty meters to the right and end up in the most dogy streets you'll ever see.

For women, these streets are definitely not safe at night - I went out to grab a late night snack with some friends one night and was literally stared up and down and even followed around, which gave me the creeps. There's a lot of pickpockets around the area as well, which means you basically have to watch your every move.

It's better to invest some more money into a hotel that's located on the other side of town - even if it'll cost you more, you'll also feel better when leaving your hotel room.

2. Buying water in stores.

If you don't know this you might not even notice them, but there's soo many fountains that carry drinking water all around the city!

They're often hidden in smaller alleys, which means that you might not always have one right at hand and will have to look for one, but as the water's quality is excellent, it's much better to spend a few minutes looking for one of the drinking fountains rather than buying a bottle of water - those can become very expensive, ranging from one to three Euros for half a litter of water.

3. Visiting during the summer months.

If you, like me, are a student who only has enough time to travel during the summer months, you really have no choice when it comes to chosing the season you want to visit Rome in.

If you can decide when you're visiting freely, however, I advise you not to come during the summer months, meaning June, July and August.
I visited in late June to July and it was unbearably hot, with 25 degrees Celsius when we woke up in the morning, reaching up to 36 degrees at mid-day.
You can imagine that when you're out and about all day, such a climate is rather harsh - no matter how much sunscreen I used, I still got sunburnt almost every day.

It's a wiser choice to visit during spring or fall - due to the city's climate, it will still be quite warm then so the weather is still enjoyable for you without making you feel like you're having your brain cooked.

4. Wearing fancy shoes like sandals or even heels.

I did Rome in sandals as, due to the heat, my feet were too swollen to fit into my sneakers, and believe me, I'm still dealing with the blisters an entire month later.

Roman streets were just not made for walking in fancy shoes. They're plastered with cobblestones and usually uneven, which means that you might even struggle when wearing comfortable shoes, but you will only get yourself hurting, blistered feet in shoes like sandals, flats or even heels (for the love of god, if you don't wish to break your ankles leave the heels at home.)

5. Grabbing a bite near tourist attractions.

Merely looking at a restaurant's menu near a major tourist attraction should be enough to put you off eating there. The prices rocket sky-high and you'll easily find yourself spending a 20€ note on freaking pasta.
Besides that, the food you'll be served there will hardly be authentic Italian food but often rather poor quality meals prepared in a short time to reel in as many tourists as possible.

It's better to venture into side streets or smaller alleys and look for restaurants there - but be careful, you should still check out their prices before ordering or you might still be trapped into paying 12€ for a bottle of water like I was. (Please punch me.)

6. Visiting the Colloseum on a weekday.

The Colloseum is one of the sights nearly every tourist will want to visit and if you do, too, you should really think about whether or not you'll stop by on a weekday and pay the full price for your ticket.

That is because entry to the Colloseum is free on Sundays, which means that you can save some real money here, especially if you're travelling with a bigger group.
However, you should keep in mind that more people will want to use this to their advantage so you should show up earlier if you want to avoid an isanely long queue.

7. Tipping.

If you've never been to Rome, you might not know that a lot of restaurant already charge for their services, meaning everything ranging from the table's decoration to the waiter's tip.
Because of that, you should always read your bill carefully to not tip a big amount on top of that.

In case the restaurant doesn't automatically charge you for their service, it is of course custom to leave a tip - but not a higher one than 10%.
You can use quite a lot of money by tipping more because you feel like you have to, even though it isn't even expected from you.

8. Not watching out for your priced possesions.

As I already mentioned earlier, there are a lot of pickpockets out and about in Rome, and not just in the area around Termini.
Every monument or even crowded street, even the undergrounds are usually home to at least one thief, and they are quite cunning - you won't even notice how they grab something out your bag or even slice up the bottom of it with a knife to send your wallet, keys or phone tumbling to the ground.

Because it's so easy to get pickpocketed here, you should always carry your bag or backpack in front of you and keep your hand on it while walking; as well as carrying your phone in your hand or bag rather than the pants' pockets.
That might sound drastic, but that way you're always keeping an eye on your belongings and make sure they stay yours.

9. Wearing the wrong clothes when you intend to enter a church.

I don't know how far churches' regulations go where you live, but here in Germany it's not required to cover your shoulders or legs in most churches so long as you keep your head uncovered.

I think that's what confuses a lot of tourists and might be why most of them try to enter the Vatican or other Roman churches wearing shorts or tank tops, because that's an absolute no-go. You will be prohibited from entering if you're not wearing appropiate clothing, which would be quite disappointing.

What you can do here is either wear something that covers your shoulders and legs up to your knees to begin with, take some clothing to change into before you enter the church or bring cloths to temporarily cover said areas.

10. Not taking enough time to marvel.

With so much to see, it's quite easy to get caught up in running around the city and doing sightseeing, but you shouldn't get too caught up in all of that because you might miss out on the wondeful atmosphere all around you.

Take some time to sit down, maybe in a cafe or even on the kerbstone and just take everything in. Watch people going about their everyday lives. Wonder how you could end up in heaven on earth. Be glad that you're able to experience all of this. Feel alive.

Now, have you made some similar tourist mistakes to mine? Please let me know about them, I'd love to hear your stories!

July Beauty Favorites

I'm a litttle late to the party. Well, this is awkward.
I'm so used to posting my beauty favorites on the last or second to last day of the month that typing this on the 3rd of August makes me feel a little weird, and a little sad for having been so undisciplined when it came to blogging last month.

The last sentence pretty much sums up my July - I was finally free of all my exams and thus decided to enjoy every free second life threw at me, which happened to be a lot of seconds.
Good for my internal peace, not quite so good for my blog. Also not so for my bank account either as I finally had the time to hit the shops downtown and check out some new beauty products.

I also re-discovered some old summer favorites of mine, and this is how my following favorite beauty products from the month of July came to be!

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Powder in 'Light Plus' (32€)

I never even intended to buy this when I ventured into my local MAC store, but I'm so glad the lovely  shopping assistant decided to do my make up for me when I asked her whether she could match me to a shade of the Mineralize Concealer because that way, I found my new holy grail powder!

What I love about this powder is that, not only does it come in a shade that is a perfect match to my skin tone - I've struggled so long to find a good one in the drugstore - but also that it's not just a powder that helps you set your base.
When applied with a Beauty Blender, this provides enough coverage to substitute a foundation, which makes it a perfect product for the hot summer months!

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (23€)

I've been dying to try out some of Too Faced's products, but as they are not available here in Germany, I've always only dreamt about them.
When I went to Rome at the end of June, however, I spotted a Too Faced counter in Sephora - and what moment screams "Screw it!" more than discovering make up products that aren't available where you live?

I have so much to say about this that a feature in this post would be too short for it all, so if you want to read an in-depth review on this mascara, I have one up here.
I have to say that I do have some minor issues with the mascara, but they don't keep me from absolutely loving it.
I've never achieved such long lashes with just one coat of mascara - and if you know me, my lashes are naturally pretty much stumps.

Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream EdT (89€)

This one's a classic. My ultimate perfume. No matter how many other perfumes I wear, a lot of people recognize me by the smell of this - it's pretty much my signature scent.

I've raved about this perfume on here so much that I don't want to bug you with my love for it for too long, but what you need to know about this is that it smells, as the name suggests, flowery but also somewhat fruity as it has a note of pear to it. What I like about the scent is that it's really light and not at all overpowering.

It's also really long-lasting and often sticks around for at least half a, if not the whole day - I've also gone swimming wearing this scent quite a lot and most of the time, you could still make out a faint smell of it afterwards, that's how great it is.

MAC Mineralize Concealer in 'NW20' (24€)

As I mentioned in my recent MAC haul, I've been dying to try one of MAC's concealers as I've hear quite a lot about them, but I've always refrained from buying one online because I had no clue which shade I had to get.

Luckily, I met them most amazing shopping assistant who matched me to a shade - thank god I had her do it because I would've gone for the lightest shade, but as I'm now sporting a tan it's actually way too light for me!

I love using this on my under-eye area as it cancels out all the nasty darkness I've got going on around there and doesn't go cakey or start sliding off my face throughout the day.

Essie Nail Polish in 'Bikini So Teeny' (7,99€)

This is another one of my favorite summer produtcs.
Ever since I've picked it up in Berlin last year, it has become one of my favorite summer nail polishes as it's definitely an eye-catcher and a nice change from the pastel polishes I'm usually wearing.

What's great about Essie's nail polishes is the value for money you get. The longevity of this is amazing, I often wear this polish for one week before it starts slightly chipping around the edges - perfect for when you're too lazy to re-do your nails every few days!

Is there a specific product you enjoyed last month?

But Is It Really Better Than Sex?

You might have noticed that I've been a bit - or quite - absent from my blog during the last week or two, and I'm really sorry about that. That was due to a nasty computer virus that literally took my laptop apart, so I had to give it away to have it fixed - it seriously broke my heart. I wish I was kidding.

However, I've got something really exciting to tell you about today.
Technically, most of you will probably have heard of Too Faced's 'Better Than Sex Mascara' by now because a ton of bloggers have been raving about it, but as Too Faced products aren't available here in Germany I've always admired the mascara from afar.

When I went to Rome, however, I managed to snatch the last one in Sephora (if you're interested in finding out about all the other cool stuff I picked up on my trip, you can find it here.)
During the past month, I've been testing it and noting down my thoughts so I can now break it down to you - is it really as great as the hype makes us believe?

The first thing I noticed while using this mascara for the first time was its wand, which is definitely out of the ordinary as it is a little wider at the bottom and top, a shape of wand that I haven't come across yet.

The wand does make application harder, at least during your first few tries - you do learn how to handle this, but it takes time and a few smudges.
Talking smudges, I also have to mention that the wand picks up quite a lot of the product, which means that you should carefully get rid of any excessive product if you don't it to clump your lashes,

I feel like I have, up to this point, only been moaning about the Better Than Sex Mascara, which I didn't even intend to do!
I just had to get all of the small issues I've had with it out of the way at first because even though they are there, the effect this has on my eyelashes is definitely worth it.

If you're no stranger to me and my blog, you'll know how much I love my Maybelline Lash Sensational because that mascara was the first one that made me look like I actually had long, full lashes.
However, Too Faced's mascara does the job almost twice as well, especially when used with an eyelash curler - with just one coat, my lashes double in lenght! Another coat lenghtens them even more - however, I wouldn't advise applying a third layer of the product as it will clump your lashes together sooner or later.

Longevity wise, this mascara is alright.
It lasts on my lashes half a day - incase I do remember that I'm wearing make up and don't rub it away - but after that, it does tend to disappear more and more as time progresses, especially on hotter day - but it doesn't leave any fallout, for some reason. Just dissolves into nothing.
Well, at least it doesn't give me panda eyes, so who am I to complain, huh?

Overall, this a through and through good product, even though it has some minor weaknesses. It's not as flawless as the hype surrounding it makes us believe, but if you can look over the few issues you might experience with this, you'll still love it nonetheless.

At a price tag of 23€ it is definitely not a beauty product you'll buy for yourself light-heartedly - even though it gives you amazing results, you might want to have this applied at Sephora for you to find out whether it's something you'll want to splurge on.

What is your favorite mascara? I'd love it if you let me know in the comments!
